Life Science and Laboratory Decontamination & Decommissioning (OGTR and DAFF)

PC1, PC2, PC3 and PC4 Laboratory Decontamination

Laboratory Decontamination is an imperative part of the life of any laboratory.

Decontamination of your laboratories should be considered at multiple times throughout the life cycle of the laboratory – post-construction, before commissioning, during the useful life and as part of decommissioning and finally, prior to demolition.

In normal day-to-day operations, instrument servicing, filter change for cabinets or HVAC etc. will require consideration of the need to disinfect prior to work. Australian & New Zealand Standards AS/NZS 2982 Laboratory Design states that people working on or in the laboratory should be made aware of the hazards present in the laboratory and any precautionary decontamination procedure.

For laboratories that have been established for several years, current use may not be reflective of historical use. In these cases, it is especially important to have your laboratory, HVAC, chemical fume cupboards/hoods, liquid waste systems and equipment properly decontaminated prior to work being done, to ensure appropriate safe access and disposal of contaminated materials.

Regulatory bodies such as the Australian Government Department of Health and Aging, Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) have strict decontamination requirements for suspension or a relinquishment of a license. Biosafety International is able to provide full regulatory reporting and clearance hat complies with these regulatory requirements.

Laboratory hardware that is disposed of without decontamination should be treated as hazardous waste, generally a very costly endeavour. Laboratory and Facility Managers have a Duty of Care to make sure that laboratories are decontaminated properly and that the appropriate pre and post-decontamination tests are completed by an Occupational Hygienist.

Biosafety provides Dept of Health & Human Services/DG trained technicians to clean and decontaminate laboratories. We have extensive experience in understanding and dealing with; Biological, Chemical, Radioactive and Physical contamination issues.

Biosafety can provide both decontamination services and Occupational Hygiene Testing/Clearance Certificates.

Testing

Biosafety can assess your laboratory to the various standards that may apply. As all laboratory requirements vary based on the scientific discipline, we understand various regulations that apply to the Australian/New Zealand Standards.

We can assess against compliance with AS2982 Laboratory Design and Construction, AS/NZS 2243 Safety in Laboratories Standards, AS 2252 Controlled Environment Standards, the various Dangerous Goods (DG) Codes and Standards and Chemical Storage.

Services include:

  • Design, Construction and Commissioning to AS2982 Lab Design Standards
  • Safety Audits
  • Fume Cupboard and Fume Cabinet Assessments for fit for purpose
  • Biological Safety Cabinet (all classes) Assessments to suit purpose
  • Engineering Control/Primary Barrier Assessments
  • Waste Audits
  • Laboratory Decommissioning for safe handover to builders
  • Safety Data Sheet Manifest Auditing and Validation
  • Chemical, Biological and Physical Agent Assessments
  • Equipment decontamination
  • Scope of works development
