Fogging for Disinfection

No matter how comprehensive a physical cleaning and disinfection regime is, it is extremely difficult to completely eliminate microbial cross contamination from surfaces and the air which could cause product/process spoilage and safety issues.

Whilst targeted physical cleaning and disinfection regimes may be sufficient to maintain day to day contamination, they are not necessarily sufficient to eliminate the array of micro-organisms which can persist in facilities, sometimes for years.

 As an additional treatment to traditional physical cleaning methods, a facility can be fogged to provide whole room decontamination, including in difficult to reach areas like ceilings, high walls and cupboards. Fogging also minimises the need to use ladders and access equipment to disinfect elevated furniture and equipment.

Fogs can be administered through Ultra Low Volume (ULV) or Electrostatic (ES) foggers and can achieve high levels of airborne and surface decontamination, (up to 6 log reductions in some cases but 4 log reductions are common). Fogging is effective against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores depending on the disinfectant used.

A diverse range of disinfectant solutions may be used, including; Chlorine Dioxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, F10TM* or similar. These chemical fogs deployed effectively can give effective of +4 log disinfection rates. Less expensive, faster and involving less facility sealing than the use of true gas disinfection methods (e.g. ClO2).

High concentrations of fine fog remain in the air to give effective disinfection times. Fogging is very effective, swift and relatively inexpensive. For complex surfaces and filter penetration, true gas methods like CDO can give superior results. For small areas or event clean-ups of an area, F10 “aerosol fogger” single use canisters, can be a very effective solution. Cost effective, storable and highly effective, each canisters is appropriate for a room volume of up to 35m3 .
